Anything’s possible in the month of May

When it comes to strawberries, prices are fairly stable this week. “We are getting plenty of supply of domestic strawberries. The Spanish ones were qualitatively fine, but less so than last year. A little less than a month ago we started offering Belgian strawberries,” says Frank Valckenier from Valckenier in Brussels, Belgium.

That stability in prices could hardly be seen in April. “From the days around Easter there were many fluctuations in the strawberry prices. They just went up and down. One day, prices were a euro higher and the next they’d be 50 cent lower again.” Frank sees a possible increase in price as we head towards Mothering Sunday. “Yet you can’t really say that with any certainty, because it’s dependent on many factors. Anything’s possible in the month of May, you can lose money or make a profit.” The trader currently also has domestic raspberries and blackberries. “I have raspberries as of this week, and prices have increased significantly. Of course, we’re still at the start of the season, so that’s fairly normal. Today, they were already around 2 euro, without auction costs.”

According to Frank, pears are selling at around 90 cents at the moment. “It’s the regular course of events. Prices aren’t very high, in previous years, they were more than a euro in May. I expect Conference will be finished in about a month. There’s not much stock left, but then again, much was damaged by hail last year.”
