"Prices are going to go through the roof"

Spain: Big damage to Huelva's strawberry production

The rains recorded last Thursday, which lasted until Sunday, have caused big damage to the strawberry harvest in the area of Huelva. At this point in the year, many growers would normally have withdrawn, but the cold in the rest of Europe has motivated them to continue supplying the demand for this product.

However, torrential rains have not helped and companies like Daifressh have been forced to look for fruit from other sources in order to comply with agreements signed with their customers.

"We are shipping strawberries from Italy, although there is very little availability, and in a couple of weeks we will start with those from Portugal, which are in the same situation," explains Ana Claramunt, manager of Daifressh. This situation will affect Daifressh until Poland, the main producing country in the area where they sell, recovers from the cold and starts to market its own strawberries.

"The weather has severely affected many schemes throughout the winter, taking a toll on virtually all products," states Claramunt. The cold has affected the majority of the countries producing this fruit, so there is very little availability in the international market. "The price is going to go through the roof," affirms Claramunt. Before the rains, the kilo of strawberries stood at 1.5 Euro for the grower; however, at this time it could reach 2 Euro. "To this must we must add that normally, in countries with their own production, the first strawberries of the campaign are always more expensive.
