Production out of Veracruz and Tabasco to peak in July and August

US supply of large size limes is tight

“Right now, lime supplies are just sufficient,” says Rudy Uresti with Jade Produce. The large sizes, 110, 150 and 175s, are tight, because the large fruit has already been picked. Smaller sizes (230s and 250s) are available in abundance. Jade Produce works with two partner-growers in Veracruz and Tabasco, two year-round lime growing regions in Mexico. “These regions will be hitting their peak production volume in July and August, so much more fruit will be available by then,” Uresti mentioned.

Warehouse expansion
“We recently expanded our warehouse in McAllen, TX from 7,000 sq ft to 18,000 sq ft, which has resulted in a 30-40 percent increase of lime sales. We used to receive 10 truckloads a week, but now receive about 20 loads per week,” Uresti said. The warehouse has a capacity of 32 trucks. Even though the expansion enables Jade Produce to move more volume, Uresti said that the expansion is based on quality product. “We specify on quality, not on volume.”

Although the majority of Jade’s lime business is made up of conventional limes, the company offers organic limes as well. “It is a very small part of our total volume, about 1-5 percent. I don’t see demand for organic limes increasing at a rapid pace,” Uresti concluded.
