Spain: 47,980 tonnes of bananas available in February

In February 2017, the Canary Islands shipped 31,772 tonnes of bananas to mainland Spain, while imports from Africa and Latin America amounted to 24,242 tonnes and re-exports reached 8,035 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to about 47,980 tonnes of bananas. This is around 4,919 tonnes more than in the previous month, representing an increase of 11.4%. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 34% and a maximum of 51%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in February were Costa Rica, with 7,885 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 4,557 tonnes, Colombia, with 3,607 tonnes, France, with 3,265 tonnes and Cameroon, with 3,188 tonnes, which together accounted for 93% of the total volume.

So far in 2017, shipments from the Canary Islands have exceeded 59,347 tonnes, imports from Africa and Latin America have been close to 47,876 tonnes and re-exports have reached 16,187 tonnes, so the available supply has amounted to 91,040 tonnes, 7,896 tonnes less than in the same period of 2016. The market share of imported bananas in Spain has fluctuated between a minimum of 35% and a maximum of 53%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year have been Costa Rica, with 16,314 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 7,767 tonnes, Colombia, with 7,503 tonnes, France, with 6,407 tonnes, and Cameroon, with 5,215 tonnes, which together accounted for 90% of the total volume.
