Turkey: Garlic production to increase by 30% this year

Turkey's production was not enough to meet the needs of the local market until May 2016, "but we have already managed to increase the volume and it is now possible to start shipping to the international market," affirms Kerem Baltu, of Tumen Tarim. "Our production volume each campaign amounts to 3,000 tonnes, but this figure could actually even double," adds Baltu.

Turkey currently exports white garlic to countries like France or Georgia and plans to enter the German market and soon also the Polish one. "We believe that this year the price will be more competitive than in previous years, so we are ready to expand; the more, the better," states Baltu. However, Turkey is not the only garlic exporting country, so it has to compete against China, Egypt and, to a smaller extent, Spain. This is because their products are marketed in the same areas. As for the local market, "we don't have strong competitors, because we have the capacity to supply all year round; something that other companies cannot do," points out Baltu.

Prices, according to Baltu, "are changing every year depending on supply and demand. At the moment, we have yet to learn what the international price is, because this year our harvest has not yet started," concludes Baltu.
