China: Red-heart Kiwi, unknown in the rest of the world

The Hong Yang, or red-heart kiwi is a variety from the Shaanxi and Sichuan provinces, in China. Its harvest begins at the end of August and "normally, it's completelly sold out by the end of the year," stated Jason Wang, of Shaanxi Qifeng Fruit Co., Ltd. This variety is characterized by having a red heart and yellow flesh.

The production volume of this kiwi is 500 tons per year, 75% of which remains in the country for domestic consumption. The rest is exported to places like Thailand (15%), Malaysia (5%), and Taiwan (5%). However, "we want the rest of the world to know our kiwis and Europe is our next target in 2017," said Wang.

Regarding its price, Wang said, "it does not vary much from year to year." Its price is 1 dollar per kilo EXW, so a 2.2 net kg box, which is how it is usually sold, costs about 11 dollars.
