Ronnie Moorman, Willem Dijk: “Plenty of fruit expected”

First Spanish watermelons on the market

Today, the first Amador watermelons arrived at Willem Dijk AGF. “For us, the season starts a week earlier than last year,” says Ronnie Moorman. “The season is gradually starting. Now that more Spanish melons have arrived on the market, the overseas season is under pressure. Watermelons from Costa Rica are now sold at 0.75 euro per kilogram, while it was 0.90/1 euro a week ago. For Spanish seedless melons directly from Spain, Spanish shipping agents want to receive 1/1.20 euro per kilogram.”

“The supply of Spanish Galia melons is also starting. Today, prices directly from Spain are at a level of between 7.50/9.00 euro per box, so that some Honduras have also become available for prices around 9 euro. There will also be plenty of watermelons from Morocco. These will also have different prices than 1.10/1.20 euro per kilogram during the coming week. The market would be great with slightly better spring weather, but considering the forecast for the coming weeks, plenty of fruit will become available.”

“According to señor Candido and his sister Rosa of the Amador family from Gandia, the fruit is of excellent quality. Willem Dijk AGF has been working exclusively with Amador, and we are extremely proud of that. So proud, that we even had some lorries outfitted with Amador lettering,” Ronnie continues. “We start with ‘premium label’ seedless melons, but we definitely want to expand with Piel de Sapo, Yellow seedless, Fashion seedless, Sugar Baby and Honey melons in coming weeks. Expectations are high this season, because of the expected volumes, some spectacular promotional actions will definitely follow this melon season.”
