Radicchio from Chioggia is doing rather well. The last winter produce reached as much as €2-2.50/kg while the spring production reached €2/kg but the stabilised at €1.10/kg (at origin).
"Greenhouse vegetable commercialisation has started as well. Cucumbers registered €0.70/kg, while the large quantities of courgettes available meant prices do not exceed €0.50/kg. Tomato prices remain high, especially for plum tomatoes from Sicily."
Director Paolo Merci explained the next investments to be made. "We will start work for 7 canopies that will improve the work of small producers and they will be ready within July. Next year, we will improve the loading and unloading platforms for wholesalers."
In 2016, thanks to an agreement with some non-profit organisations, 1,022 tons of fruits and vegetables were donated to avoid waste. Other initiatives planned are: meetings between foreign buyers and local operators will be held in May (9th) and October (17th) to strengthen exports and, in late May 2017, there will be the final part of the project involving schools to educate children to eat fruit and vegetables.
