Panic on the carrot market

Various questions are currently in play on the Dutch carrot market: “Until when will the season for stored carrots last? Will cleaners continue for a while, or will retail quickly switch to the new harvest from Southern Europe, which will start soon? No one can say how this season will finish. We currently still have many carrots, and it’s not looking great. If ‘our’ carrot can be worked with for a while longer, there will be a large chance that stocks will deplete completely,” says Arjan Freriks from Hagranop.

Logistics still have to get started
He indicates that quite a bit of carrot has been shipped last week and this week. “We had interest from various countries, but unfortunately, prices didn’t rise because of the larger demand. The price difference between good and slightly poorer carrots also became increasingly smaller, so that almost everyone chose the best quality. The market had a kind of panic reaction, so some practically ‘gave away’ their batches for 15 euro or less. Trade is emotional, and everyone deals with it in their own way. Other producers choose to ‘hold on’ to their product when prices are that low.”

According to Arjan, it’s especially the cleaners, and in Germany in particular, because they are normally the first to switch to new product that we are dependent on. “And retailers give the order to continue with the old or start with the new harvest.” He currently cannot say anything yet about the market. “It’s always calm for a few days after Easter. Especially regarding the export to Eastern European countries such as Poland, because those logistics still have to get started. That could happen this week, but it could also happen next week.”
