Peru: Lambayeque loses exports due to rains

According to Paola Corvacho, the manager of the Regional Exporters Association (AREX), exports of products from Lambayeque declined during the rainy season, and the capsicum (pepper and paprika) sector was the most affected.

Corvacho said that capsicum exports fell by up to 80% during the months of February and March. Avocados exports declined by 20%, grape exports fell by 21% and mango exports by 5%. As a result, exports during the first quarter only amounted to 53 million dollars, when in the previous year they totaled 120 million dollars during the same period.

Corvacho said that the rains had affected a total of 800 hectares of various agricultural export crops in Lambayeque, which would make it very difficult for the sector to achieve selling the 460 million dollars they sold in 2016.

The main markets for Lambayeque's products are the United States, the 27 countries of the European Community, China, and the Middle East.
