Mexico: Avocados are Michoacan's most exported food product

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA), the commercialization of Michoacan products abroad continues with solid and firm progress.

Avocados continue to be the number one product system in terms of export volume, as they accounts for 94 percent of Michoacan's food exports.

Jaime Rodríguez Lopez, federal delegate of the SAGARPA in Michoacan, said that up to February, Michoacan had exported 194 thousand tons of food products. The products with the biggest demand abroad are avocado, lime, blackberry, strawberry, papaya, and melon.

The federal delegate said that avocado exports led the state's exports up to the second month of the year with 94 percent, followed by limes with three percent, blackberry with two percent, and strawberry with one percent. Meanwhile, papaya, melon, cranberry, raspberry, guava, and other food products accounted for less than one percent of exports.

Rodriguez Lopez said that the main importing countries of Michoacan's avocados were: the United States, with a total of 156,843 tons, followed by Japan with almost eight thousand tons, and Canada with over seven thousand tons of avocado. These countries, and in this order, are also the main destinations for most of the products exported by Michoacan.
