Poland: 'Sudden freeze won't affect coming fruit season'

Like many countries in mainland Europe, Poland has been hit with a sudden cold front, seeing temperatures dipping down to freezing, with some regions even receiving snowfall.

When asked if he thought that the sudden colder temperatures would have an effect on the coming season, Arkadiusz Widomski from LubApple, replied, "I don't think any of the fruits will be affected because the negative temperatures only lasted for a few hours in the early morning, so I think everything will be ok. This is normal in Poland; I spoke with a few of the growers who have also been saying the same thing."

The open field strawberry season is set to start at the end of May and the earlier strawberries, grown in tunnels, are expected around the 20th of May. Although LubApples is very active in the export market, Arkadiusz said that all of their strawberries are kept exclusively for the Polish market.

"We don't have huge quantities of strawberries being produced in comparison to the demand of our 40 mln residents, so we can sell them very easily. Polish consumers prefer local strawberries and it is a very big market." shared Arkadiusz.

Our biggest export item remains apples, with approximately 100,000 tonnes being exported annually and we still have supplies which we hope to sell completely over the next 2 months.

"We have a lot of customers who are taking our apples to countries like India, Jordan, Israel, Spain, Portugal and we have even found some new customers in Greece who are very happy with our Jonagold and Jonaprince. India and the Middle East still tend to prefer varieties like Red Chief and Royal Gala." concluded Arkadiusz.
