First fruits sold at auction at The Greenery this morning

Raspberry season starts again

The Dutch raspberry season has started again at The Greenery today. The first raspberries were sold at auction last Friday. The raspberries are from Mts Pertijs from Etten-Leur.

Marcel van Lith, senior salesman for soft fruit at The Greenery said: “We see an increasing interest from consumers for raspberries. The number of consumers who annually buy raspberries increases considerably, and the purchasing amount per consumer is also increasing.” The volume of raspberries at The Greenery grows along with demand from the market, and the company expects another increase in volume this year.

Because of the good experiences last year, a large share of this expansion will consist of Lagorai. The Lagorai variety has its origin in the Italian Trentino region, and is characterised by its excellent flavour and shelf life. Reactions to Lagorai from customers were very positive, and growers are also enthusiastic about the variety. In addition to Lagorai, the supply of raspberries also consists of Grandeur and Kwanza during the season.

The Dutch raspberry season will last until early December. The final greenhouse raspberries will then be picked. The outdoor raspberry season will start mid-June, and will last until late October. Thanks to the import of raspberries from Spain, Portugal and Mexico, The Greenery is able to meet demand for raspberries year-round.
