China: Success for Hainan mangoes in the upscale market

"The major cultivation areas for mangoes in China are Sanya in Hainan Province, Baise in Guangxi Province, Yunnan Province and Panzhihua in Sichuan Province. The supply of Hainan mangoes lasts from November to June. Currently, the market situation is good," said Mr. Gang Long, business manager of Hainan Natural Fruit Agricultural Development Ltd.

"Compared with last season, the yields are about 10% higher this season, and the quality is better. This is largely because of the stable weather conditions throughout the year, as well as the fact that the farmers no longer pursue an early harvest, but instead allow the mangoes to grow without using a high dose of growth hormone."

"As for the market price, the prices of quality mangos have increased by approximately 30% compared with the same period last year. There are four major market incentives causing such an increase. Firstly, the farmers have focused more on improving the quality of their mangoes. Secondly, the active e-commerce market has effectively extended the sales channels. Thirdly, Hainan's unique geographic location provides an ideal climate for mangoes. Lastly, Hainan mangoes have been popular in the market with a stable group of customers."

"Over the past few years, large volumes of mangoes from Southeast Asia have been imported to China, which has posed threat to the market share of domestic produce, especially because these imported mangoes enter the market at around the same time. Moreover, both cultivation costs and land costs are low in Southeast Asian countries. Thus, these imported mangoes have a price advantage compared to those from Hainan, and their sales to consumers with medium-to-low income are increasing every year."

"We are a company committed to producing green, chemical-free and healthy produce with our own cultivation, processing, marketing and R&D teams. We have a total of 1,000 acres of plantations in Sanya, Hainan, including the mango plantation in Meishan and the Damao mango plantation in Sanya. Our major mango variety is Guifei mango, also called the Red Dragon. Our high-quality mangoes are registered under the trademark of 'Rainbow Guifei' , ''Duocai Guifei' and 'Qicai Guifei'. 40% of them are sold on e-commerce platforms and the rest through traditional channels to wholesale markets and supermarkets in first and second tier cities in north China and the area along the east coast."
