CREA Acireale researchers obtain new tangerine & grapefruit hybrids

CREA Acireale researchers have obtained new tangerine-like and grapefruit hybrids, for which plant variety rights have been required, as well as new clone selections of pigmented oranges which may contribute to extending the varietal selection and favour product innovation.

The findings were discussed during a meeting held on 5th April 2017 in Lamezia Terme. CREA researchers also illustrated a new variety assessment method called "fast track" which entails a cooperation between CREA and POs. In particular, the POs and their associates will have the chance to evaluate genotypes in different environments and provide breeders with information on their performances.

It will therefore be possible to obtain detailed information on the potential of new hybrids and favour a more rapid and effective diffusion of varietal innovations.

A similar meeting was also held on 29th March in Acireale between CREA researchers and Sicilian citrus fruit POs.

Considering the importance of citrus fruit cultivation in Calabria, CIA, together with Confagricoltura and Copagri, organised a meeting with local POs focusing on the fact that the gap between Italian citrus fruit cultivation and foreign competitors needs to be filled if we want to go back to being leaders in this sector.
