Global management of new varieties with data bases

The Global Management of the commercialization of New Varieties as Intellectual Property is a daunting task for anyone. The coordination and communications related to these are a constant factor. One must make sure all stakeholders around the world are involved in the necessary tasks to obtain protection. This protection requires mandated time frames and explicit documentation. Specific actions need to be taken to protect and successfully commercialize any new and possibly valuable inventions.

Data Bases have been put in place to assist in introducing and commercializing these new cultivars. With development of Cloud based solutions and the ability to have input and readability in real time from around the world, the functions necessary for a successful global program are now an actuality.

The Associated International Group of Nurseries (AIGN) is utilizing their data base that is named Hertha.

The program maintains all descriptive information related to a cultivar and performs the following functions:
  • Identifies all shipping of the material globally.
  • Records all evaluations in all domains.
  • Maintains records on all test blocks including plot maps.
  • Stores shipment records and contracts related to such on a worldwide basis.
  • Holds all pictures related to the variety taken from all domains.
  • Notifies all users of critical timing for IP applications.
  • Maintains all information related to Patents, Plant Breeders Rights, and Trademarks for all usage globally.
  • Maintains all contractual information related to the testing and licensing of the new cultivar.
  • Can assimilate all information into various report formats for different stakeholders.
  • Allows the managers oversight as to global activity to support contractual obligations.
This has aided AIGN to aggressively pursue with confidence the global management of cultivars through their membership.

Another Data Base system that has just become completed is the Idyiadata base.

It is owned and operated by a company based in Washington State called Proprietary Variety Management (PVM). This data base is designed to provide for the management of the commercialization process of any cultivar globally. It tracks all propagation as well as growing sites, packaging and the selling of the fruit.

This data base performs the following functions for the various stakeholders:
  • Tracks the sales of all nursery stock by licensed propagators that include the details of the sale including cultivar and rootstock details and exactly where the plantings are initiated and maintained with GPS coordinates.
  • Tracks the sales of the fruit products by details such as type of packaging, destinations, price from all packing and marketing facilities.
  • Is able, with proper models, to predict cropping and production details for coming years along with comparative analysis with actual production and sales.
  • Is able to find trends in marketing related to various criteria.
  • Will track all inputs for variety globally in real time.
  • Is able to to integrate with interactive maps such as Google Maps and others to illustrate planting details from regional overviews to individual plants for management of plantings.
