Major mango shortages

“We currently have good demand for all sizes of mango, and prices are high. Supply, on the other hand, is very limited. Regarding mangoes, it’s been very calm for us for weeks now. We’ll receive two containers this week, with the Palmer and Tommy varieties from Brazil. These containers were sold out some weeks ago. If you’ve got mangoes right now, they’ll be sold in no time at all, it’s child’s play, " says Sjoerd Meiir.

He continues: “Prices have been high for a while now, even when there was plenty of supply. By now, Peru has basically finished their season. There’s been a lot of rain, of course, so less was shipped. Brazil has a lot of domestic sales, prices are high there, so they export less. They expect a lot of money when they export. We personally decided not to import for this reason, because the market is always insecure. Ivory Coast will arrive later. The Kent mangoes are only allowed to be shipped from mid-April.”

Demand for mangoes increases as we head for Easter. “I don’t expect prices to increase even more. After this holiday prices usually decrease, but perhaps they’ll remain stable this year. The volumes of Kent from Ivory Coast is now being shipped and will arrive in Europe a week-and-a-half later. Volumes won’t be large at first, so larger numbers probably won’t arrive until early May. It’s still uncertain what’ll happen when Ivory Coast enters the market. I think Palmer from Brazil will be most affected by it, because the market still prefers Kent.”
