The asparagus season in Brandenburg has begun
The first asparagus shoots made an appearance a few weeks ago and now the asparagus season is to be official declared open in Beelitz (Potsdam-Mittelmark) on Tuesday.
By the end of June, farmers will need to have made the majority of their sales, said the Ministry of Agriculture, as the season traditionally ends on the 24th of June.
Asparagus is produced on 92 farms in the federal state of Brandenburg on about 4,400 hectare - only Lower Saxony grows more, on almost 6,000 hectares. The asparagus farmland in Beelitz consists of 15 farms - a cultivation area of 1,300 hectares. In 2016, 19,600 metric tonnes of asparagus were harvested in Brandenburg alone, a record high since 1991.
Asparagus now takes up 75% of the total vegetable farmland in the region.
