Supermarket of the year 2017: EDEKA is two-time champion

The votes for "Supermarket of the Year" 2017 once again demonstrate the strength and innovative power of medium-sized stores in the EDEKA network. Two independent EDEKA merchants impressed everyone. In the category "independent and over 2,000 square metres" Stefanie Brehm and her EDEKA store in Berlin outpaced the strong competition. Christoph Kolb and his team from EDEKA Kolb in Volkach secured the coveted award in the category "independent and under 2,000 square meters". Last Thursday the awards were presented at a ceremony in Bonn.

Edeka-Center Berlin

Leading the category "independent over 2,000 square meters" is the Berlin-based merchant, Stefanie Brehm. In her EDEKA center in Berlin-Mahlsdorf she and her team are committed to the clientele by constantly working on new innovative ideas, whether it is regarding the layout of the store, the service or the product range. In her store you can find a berry freezer, a salad bar, a well-stocked cheese department and also a self-service soup bar where customers can enjoy a freshly prepared meal in the supermarket. Even promising food innovations from start-ups often find their way on to the shelves of the almost 2,500msupermarket.

In the category "Independent under 2,000 square metres" EDEKA Kolb was at the top of the podium in Volkach. This branch is also distinguished by many special services. Owner Christoph Kolb and his team are always on the lookout for new products, which they present on the 1,750marea. This includes, for example, a selection of more than 300 varieties of whiskey as well as numerous craft beers and cider. Regional and organic products also play a key role. There is a "meat educational trail" where you can learn about the various specialties available at the counters.

The consumers vote
The largest German competition in food retail is carried out in cooperation with Lebensmittelpraxis-Verlags and the magazine "Meine Familie & ich" (My family and I). More than 100,000 consumers chose their top 100 stores in Germany, which were subsequently examined more closely by the judges. For the "Supermarket of the Year" award, the judges visited the nominated markets incognito and evaluated them by factors such as profitability, assortment, shop design and staff management, as well as atmosphere and flair.
