Italy: 500 tons of sliced watermelons for Canova

"The market is continuously expanding. Pre-cut watermelon slices are getting more and more popular and we are equipped to meet all kinds of needs," explains Enrico Casadei from Canova.

"The reasons behind this success are easy to understand, even though we did not expect to reach these results. Small families find it difficult to eat entire watermelons in a short period of time and, what is more, consumers like to see what they buy. Last year, we sliced 500 tons of watermelons. 10% were organic and, this year, the percentage will increase."

Each watermelon is cut into four. Apofruit uses both seeded and seedless varieties which are sliced by hand. They are available between late May and late August.

Many will remember when, last year, the owners of a store placed a sign saying "please don't knock, no one will answer" as they were tired of people trying to figure out which watermelons to buy.

Almaverde Bio, a brand owned by Canova, is focusing on the fresh-cut range to meet the needs of their final customers. Organic fresh fruit that is peeled, washed and cut with no additives or protective liquid.

"The popularity of fresh-cut fruit is destined to grow. I believe organic produce will contribute to this popularity a lot."
