Mexico exported 24% more avocados in January

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (SAGARPA) stated that exports of "Made in Mexico" avocado during January increased by 24.4 percent over the same month of the previous year, thanks to an increased national production and to a market diversification policy.

According to statistics from the federal agency, based on data from the Via Internet Commercial Information System (SIAVI), in the first month of the year, sales of this product amounted to 223,285,000 dollars, i.e. 43.7 million dollars more than in January 2015.

During the first month of 2017, this product was marketed to 22 international destinations in America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The five main destinations for the Mexican avocado were the United States, Canada, Japan, El Salvador, and France. Together, these countries registered purchases of 213,640,000 dollars, which accounts for 95.7 percent of the international market.

In January 2017, the United States acquired 180,166,000 dollars in Mexican avocado, which meant the demand had a 19.2 percent annual rate increase, and an 80.9 percent participation in relation to the same month of the previous year. 

In that period, Canada bought 15.4 million dollars of avocado, displaying a 96.7 percent annual rate growth; Japan, 11.2 million dollars, 23.5 percent more; El Salvador, 3.4 million dollars, which amounts to 11.8 percent, and France, 2.8 million dollars, i.e. 98.3 percent more. 

In 2016, sales of "Made in Mexico" avocado totaled $ 2.227 billion dollars, and had an annual rate increase of 19 percent.

From 2013 to 2016, exports increased by 76.2 percent, as they went from $1.246 billion dollars to $2.227 billion, which means the country had an additional income of $963.093 billion dollars in those four years.

In this period, the average sales of Mexican avocado to the world amounted to $ 1.74 billion dollars, with a Average Annual Growth Rate of 15.2 percent.

In 2016, the main export destinations for this product were the United States, Japan, Canada, Spain, France, the Netherlands, El Salvador, China, Honduras, and Guatemala.

Together, these 10 nations account for 98.9 percent of total exports made in 2016, worth $ 2.203 billion dollars.

The United States accounted for 76.8 percent of sales; Japan, 7 percent; Canada, 6.7 percent; Spain, 1.72 percent; France, 1.70 percent, and the Netherlands, 1.6 percent.

The remaining four other countries accounted for 3.4 percent of the exports of this fruit. 

Exports to the countries of the Arabian Peninsula (the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar) stood out in 2016, as they increased by more than 10-fold, from 205.8 thousand dollars in 2015 to 2,071,000 dollars last year.

The avocado is the country's third export food product, preceded only by beer and tomato.
