Complementary seasons drive diversification into Brussels sprouts

This year, Oceanside Pole has started to grow Brussels sprouts. “We have been producing Roma and vine-ripened tomatoes for over 75 years on the same land where we’re now producing Brussels sprouts,” says Priya Singh, General Manager with Oceanside Pole. “The sprouts are our first product diversification. We chose them because they have a complementary season to our tomatoes, and they grow well in our climate during the winter months.”

Increased demand for Easter
Production started in the third week of March and volumes are good in all sizes. “We will be harvesting and packing daily so we are able to supply all our customers until we finish harvesting at the end of May,” shared Singh. Oceanside Pole anticipates steady sales through the season, but is seeing increased demand in the weeks leading up to Easter. “Brussels sprouts are popular for Easter, so we’re seeing an increased demand now as customers stock up for the holiday.”

Rain improved quality
As the name suggests, the company’s production is centered around Oceanside, just north of San Diego. “In the past few months, we had a good amount of rain and cool weather, but nothing that would affect our crop. If anything, the rain and cool weather helped improve the quality of our sprouts,” Singh mentioned.

While California retailers are embracing the sprouts as a high quality, locally grown item, they are also being shipped to retailers across the US and Canada. “The feedback from our customers has been outstanding. We are making sure the sprouts meet the standards that our Oceanside Pole label has had for the past 75 years.”
