'Regular' vegetable prices see increase

Ukraine: Domestic cucumber sales more profitable than exports

Foreign buyers are offering such low prices for Ukrainian hothouse cucumbers that growers are finding it more profitable to keep the vegetable for the domestic markets.

"Belarus is pretty much the only buyer for Ukrainian cucumber, with very little demand from the EU countries because of the low prices in the region. The absence of these exports has negatively affected the price of cucumbers in early April, making prices fall by almost 10%," shared Tetiana Getman from 'Info-Shuvar'.

Greenhouse growers are currently offering the 'Athlete' and 'Estafeta' cucumber varieties for 30-36 €1.07-1.27 per kg. This price has proven difficult to sell on the domestic market, but there is no other option in terms of export, because exporters are only offering between €1.00 -1.07 per kg. (prices as of 6 April, 2017- Info-Shuvar)

"To highlight the difficulties that growers are finding themselves in, cucumbers are being sold for 25% lower than the price set by Ukrainian growers. For example, cucumbers at the Polish wholesale market in Bronisze are being sold for €0.86-1.10 per kg." said Getman.

'Common' vegetables having more success
On the other side of the coin, prices of the more common vegetables like cabbage, carrots, potatoes and onions are up by an average of 25%, compared to just a week ago.

Cabbage has seen the largest jump of 30-35% with the current price of €0.14-0.16/kg; carrots are up by 10-15% at €0.10 -0.12 EUR/kg, potatoes up 25% at €0.16-1.17/kg and onions prices have stayed at €0.07-0.11/kg. (prices as of 10 April, 2017- Info-Shuvar)

"This is the biggest jump in prices since the beginning of 2017. Operators think that the price increase is mostly due to the reduced supply of good quality products in the storage in Ukraine." concludes Getman.
