Lower volumes for South African Fuerte avocados

The South African avocado-season is in full swing. The season started in February and will last until the end of May. The prices at the start of the season were high and definitely, there is a demand for avocados. Unfortunately, the season this year hasn't been that good and the overall yield is down.

Ndivhuwo Fruit Farms has been not exporting directly. They are using marketing channels in order to export their avocados. "These marketing channels know where the good prices are and it is wiser to do it like this being a small company," says Ndivhuwo Nyambeni.

He also added that avocado prices on the domestic market are typically strong in February. During this part of the season, there usually aren't that many companies actively harvesting and marketing their produce.

Ndivhuwo Fruit Farms produces green skinned Fuerte avocados. In spite of the lower volumes of the current season, the sizes of the fruit are quite good, with mostly medium to large sizes.

Ndivhuwo Nyambeni’s company was founded by his father in 1986. In 2005, the company grew into the avocado supplier it has become today. The company is specialized in green skinned Fuerte avocados, but this may be subject to change. “Green skinned avocados aren’t that popular outside of South Africa. There is much more demand for black skinned varieties like Hass. This may have to do with the fact that black skinned avocados don’t need as much plant protection as the green skinned varieties do.”

He also said that the cultivation of avocados is developing quite well in Africa. “Most growers are getting into avocado production. Avocado consumers can be found in all demographic and social groups. The only difference is quality. Avocados of higher quality find their way to consumers with a higher income,” concludes Ndivhuwo Nyambeni.
