Greg Akins on the annual Fruit Ripening & Ethylene Management workshop

“Each time I attend, I learn something new”

On April 18 and 19, UC Davis will be organizing its annual workshop Fruit Ripening & Ethylene Management. “To achieve maximum sales for certain fruit varieties, it is crucial to offer it properly ripened to consumers,” says Greg Akins with Catalytic Generators and QA Supplies. “Attendees will gain greater knowledge on delivering properly ripened fruit along the distribution chain while minimizing fruit loss and maximizing profits.”

Demonstration sessions
The workshop covers many topics, including the biology of ripening, current trends at retail with ripened fruit, and design of ripening facilities and programs. “There’s even involved demonstration sessions for maturity measurement and development of ripening protocols,” shared Akins. Typically, shippers, wholesalers and retail companies attend the two-day session. “It is a great workshop for anyone tasked with the responsibility of ripening and/or increasing fresh produce sales.”

Networking opportunities
“Each time I attend, I learn something new,” commented Akins who has been in the ripening and ethylene business for over 30 years. “In addition, the networking opportunities are fantastic, with the chance to meet the industry and academic instructors and others involved in the ripening process. The wealth of knowledge shared by the extensive panel of instructors is worth more than the modest enrollment fee, and in two days, attendees will have a greater appreciation for the art of ripening and power of ethylene. If you are involved in ripening, you really should make plans to come to Davis for this workshop.”

Catalytic Generators and its sister company QA Supplies are sponsors of the event. “It’s our 8th year and we financially support the workshop to help the UC Postharvest Technology Center offset some of their expenses,” mentioned Akins. Several of the companies’ employees attend the workshop to show ethylene generators and other postharvest instruments to attendees.
