Strong prices yet low volumes for Moroccan avocados

The avocado market was generally under-supplied during the winter season. The Mediterranean growers, of which Morocco is a part, have had less production than usual and this is mainly due to the unfavorable climatic conditions, especially the heat during the flowering and the fruit setting, which caused an inevitable loss of many fruit and had an effect on the quality and development of the fruits saved. Added to this, the winter was colder than usual and frost and rain have caused significant damage in some areas. As a result of these severe weather conditions, Moroccan as well as Spanish growers have lacked volume and big sizes.

According to Aziz Simo, general manager of ABAZ Societe Civile AgricoleWorldwide demand for avocados is still increasing. Prices are getting higher as well, especially with regards to the current situation for the Moroccan avocado sector. Unfortunately our volumes are smaller than last season and we lack big sizes."

He also said that demand will probably remain high over the coming weeks while arrivals from Mediterranean sources will continue to decrease. The transition from the winter season to the summer season will be marked this year by a significant shortage, due to the flooding in the north of Peru in areas where avocado production is occurring. In addition to the impact on fruit volumes and quality, Peruvian growers will face logistical difficulties in transporting the goods within the country and reaching the ports for export, due to fallen bridges and damaged roads.
