China: Veg prices rose last week in the Beijing Xinfadi market

Last week the highest vegetable price of 4,72 RMB per kilogram (23 and 24 March) in Beijing Xinfadi market, is 0.43% higher than the price 4.70 RMB per kilogram of the week before. The lowest price of 4.42 RMB per kilogram (19 March) is 3.91% lower than the 4.60 RMB per kilogram of the week before.

Last week's lowest price occurred at the beginning of the week, the highest price emerged at the end of the week. This shows that the price for vegetables last week generally was strongly fluctuating. The vegetable price at the end of last week rose again after a fall, mainly because the follow-up manufacturers in the vegetable market. The quality of the new vegetables was better than the previous period and the price moderately increased. These events can be considered as normal.

The sales of vegetables in Beijing currently still constitutes 3 types of vegetables. The first are vegetables from the southern manufacturers, which have already entered their final period in the market and are progressively being replaced by vegetables from the northern greenhouses. The price of these greenhouse vegetables is higher than the southern vegetables that are produced in the fields. The second type consists of vegetables coming from the northern facilities, which have already started the period in which crops are rotated. The vegetables that were harvested early are slowly leaving the market, so the amount of vegetables that were harvested at a later time is enlarging steadily. The vegetables that were harvested later have only recently arrived on the market. Their quality is also better than the early harvested vegetables that are leaving the market. The last type is the vegetables from the winter storehouses. Because of the rather long storage period, the quality of these vegetables is slightly less. These of which the quality is better have a higher price, but the ones of low quality show a drop in price.
