Argentina was the main market for Bolivian bananas in 2016

According to the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE), Argentina was the main market for bananas produced in Bolivia in 2016, as it concentrated 96.4% of fruit exports.

Based on data from the National Statistics Institute (INE), the IBCE, which is an entity that analyzes foreign trade, stated that in addition to Argentina, Bolivia sold its bananas to Uruguay (2.9%), Chile ( 0.6%), and Peru (0.1%).

In 2016, Bolivia exported 128,408 tons of bananas for 35 million dollars, the report said.

98% of the Bolivian bananas exported came from the central region of Chapare and Cochabamba Tropics and the cargo was mainly exported through the town of Pocitos, on the border with Argentina.

According to the same source, the value of banana sales fell 25% in January, when compared to the same month in 2016, from 4.2 million dollars to 3.2 million dollars.

In the last five years, the highest record of Bolivian banana exports was achieved in 2015, when the country exported more than 133,000 tons worth 38 million dollars.
