Italy: Forum on food wellness organised by Almaverde Bio

"Which do you think is healthier - fruit juice or fruit nectar?" This is the question with which Alessandra Bordoni, nutritionist and professor at the University of Bologna, started her report at the II Forum sul benessere alimentare, organised by Almaverde Bio during the Wellness Food Festival in Cesena on 1st April 2017.

The event was organised at Cesena Fiera

"The answer is fruit juice. By law, it needs to have 100% fruit content with no added sugars, while nectar can have 50% of fruit with added sugar. I'm telling you this because knowing how to read labels is essential to be aware consumers."

Renzo Piraccini, President of Almaverde Bio, talked about retailers. "The share of organic products in retail is usually 3%, but it is actually 10% where there are Almaverde Bio islands. This happens because there are usually not many organic products on display and they are difficult to locate. In Forlì, Faenza, Rimini and Cesena, a few retailers allowed us to set up islands with organic products. Sales have increased a lot, reaching up to 10% of the total."

Guest of honour chef Simone Rugiati said that "if you shop well, your own home is the best restaurant in the world." Maybe he didn't realise that there are people who have trouble cooking an egg.

But his reasoning is correct. He continued: "when you buy fruit and vegetables, look your supplier in the eye and establish a relationship based on trust. He must be able to advise you every day. Even in supermarkets, look for section managers, ask, read the origin and pay attention to seasonality."

"We have always worked 'for' and not 'against' something or someone," explained Almaverde director Paolo Pari. "We don't want to only supply consumers with high-quality products, we want give recognition to the passion and professionalism of our producers."
