Michoacan is Mexico's second largest producer of grapefruit

Secretary Francisco Huergo Maurin stated that Michoacan had ranked as the second biggest producer of grapefruit in the country thanks to the more than 4,000 hectares devoted to this crop that it has in at least 7 municipalities, in which the municipality of Mugica stands out.

Michoacan produced 49,566 tons of grapefruit in the previous cycle, mainly in the municipalities of Mugica, Paracuaro, Apatzingan, Buenvista, Gabriel Zamora, La Huacana, and Tepalcatepec.

The state official said grapefruit producers had worked hard on health issues, with the firm intention of obtaining healthy and safe fruits that would allow them to increase and improve their sales abroad. About 2,000 hectares of organic grapefruit allowed them to earn higher profits.

Huergo Maurin said that Michoacan had the potential to increase its production of this citrus and that the Ministry of Rural Development and Agricultural Food would continue to strengthen their efforts regarding plant and animal health.

He highlighted that the municipality of Mugica was the biggest producer of grapefruit in the entity, as in 2015 its crop area amounted to 1,877 hectares, i.e. almost half of all the grapefruit crops in Michoacan.

Grapefruit contains vitamin C, provitamin A, minerals, flavonoids, and folic acid. One of the advantages of this citrus is that it helps people lower their cholesterol levels, lose weight, moisturize their skin, and prevent diseases, such as cancer.

Grapefruits also help improve blood circulation, strengthen hair and nails, and prevent colds and the flu in the winter season.
