Peru: Producers to grow organic grapes in Gran Chimu

The Regional Agricultural Management Committee of La Libertad (COGERALL) and the Alabama SA company will provide technical assistance to more than 1,500 farmers in order to increase the quality of grape production in the province of Gran Chimu.

This public-private partnership comes in the wake of the suspension of purchases of grapes by the Ecuadorian market, due to the high use of agrochemicals in the product.

The goal is to move from traditional farming to organic farming so that, over time, the fruit could be free of any chemical and have a high nutritional level.

In this regard, the regional manager of Agriculture of La Libertad, who also chairs COGERALL, Hernan Aquino Dionisio, highlighted the importance of this type of strategic alliances with a company certified in producing high quality genetically engineered seeds.

He said Alabama had extensive experience in managing and producing grapes, as it already has several hectares of crops in Cascas, where their production strategy has yielded better results than the traditional procedures.

This alliance will also help improve the economy of the farmers in Marmot, Sayapullo, Lucma, and Cascas, districts of that province. Producers will also work on environmental care issues, according to the problems presented by the crops.
