In Switzerland, the berry area has increased slightly in the past year, by 2.4%. In general, the area of most products has increased. Only the raspberry (-5.6%) and redcurrant (-6.4%) areas decreased. In the current year, the strawberry area increased once again (+1.5%), and the blueberry area also increased again (+11.8%).
With strawberries, the trend for modern cultivation methods are visible once again. For example, more annual than biennial plants were planted. The strawberry varieties grown most often are Darselect, Clery and Joly. The Elsanta area decreased by 30 per cent. The varieties Joly, Asia, Flair and Salsa, on the other hand, showed an obvious increase. It’s interesting that the strawberry area increased once again, while sales of strawberries weren’t always easy, especially during the great periods, in recent years.
The decrease of the raspberry area can probably be blamed on the problems with the Asian fruit fly, which makes it difficult to keep production going. Despite all the problems, the areas of the other berries increased again, for berries continue to be a trend.
