"Egypt: "Spanish, Indian and Chilean grapes are our main competition"
The company, Easy Food Egypt, has been exporting several varieties of grapes for two years, with the Sugraone, Red Flame, Crimson and Red Globe being its flagship products. The fruit is shipped to countries like the UK, the Maldives, Malta and Italy. "Last year we exported about 50 containers; we left nothing for domestic consumption," states Mahmoud Saeed Khairy, head of the Egyptian company. In any case, they are not the only ones supplying grapes in the areas where their production is marketed, and Spain, India and Chile are strong competitors.
"Last year, we produced enough fruit to fill 50 containers, but this year we have set ourselves the challenge of reaching 60," affirms Saeed Khairy. Although it is still early to estimate prices, since the campaign is only just starting, they can take as reference the average price per kilo at which the fruit was sold last year, which was 8 pounds.
