New data platform Antwerp shares data from logistical supply chain

“Making a digital, logistical success story with NxtPort”

The Antwerp port community introduced the digital platform NxtPort in late January. “This will function as a kind of ‘virtual storage’ of the data coming from the maritime supply chain. NxtPort is focused on improving the efficiency of container transfer in the Port of Antwerp. Right now, all companies active in and around the port have their own IT platforms, but these are not interconnected, nor do they have connected interaction. This causes delays, double work and extra costs,” says Steve Alaerts of foodcareplus. “We thought it was time to gather all possible data from the entire supply chain.”

Perishables

Steve continues: “For example, a stevedore doesn’t know with which means of transport a container is transported on after arrival at his terminal. NxtPort wants to gather and provide the information available. The stevedore can then place the containers at the right spot or in the right order, so that these can be picked up by the correct means of transport. This is very efficient, because people no longer lose time by moving containers multiple times. When all important information is supplied, the container can reach its final destination faster. Considering we are active in perishables, this new system is a relief. The highest possible transparency and information-exchange is very much desired for products that have to be with consumers as quickly as possible.”

Lite Traxx
Steve indicates that they already gather a large part of the data during their activities as a service provider. “We are willing to share this information with other interested parties within the supply chains. For this, we make use of our own Lite Traxx tool, which preserves various matters in the container, such as position, temperature and light. If we are able to share this information with official authorities such as FAVV and Customs, we create new opportunities. For instance, they can then conduct inspections for which they have more background information of the conditions during transport of the products. Based on the information they receive, the authorities can then make better decisions and work more efficiently. Quick inspections will result in a quicker delivery of the container.” The platform is currently not yet active. “Everything has been worked out as regards ‘rules’: the data from many different parties, who obviously want it to be protected, will eventually be shared. We are now recruiting to compose the development teams.”

“This new initiative makes the Port of Antwerp more prominent, and allows for a good opportunity to make it into an important European food gateway. We are looking forward to the moment NxtPort is actually implemented. It is an important part of the digital, maritime logistics. This project could make the Port of Antwerp the global reference for an intelligent and technologically advanced port, or a digital, logistical success story.”
