Chile has become China's largest fruit supplier

According to recent data from Chinese customs, in 2016 Chile's total fruit export to China amounted $1.2 billion, increasing by 22% compared to that of 2015. Thus Chile has replaced Thailand as China's largest supplier of imported fresh fruits. The China-Chile Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was officially implemented in 2006, according to which, within 10 years, 97.2% of the total products imported from Chile would eventually have access to the Chinese market with zero tariff.

Chen Jianhua, assistant president of Joy Wing Mau, pointed out that after the signing of the China-Chile FTA, fruits from Chile enjoyed a low import tariff of 13% in China, which has brought down their prices and thus made them more competitive in the market. Last month, the first batch of Chilean nectarines arrived in China. This is a new member on the list of imported Chilean fruits according to the agreement signed by the two countries at the end of last year. This month, Joy Wing Mau and Hortifrut, Chilean fruit giant, established a joint venture aimed at promoting fruit production in China.
