Producers from the Viejo de Olmos Valley, in the region of Lambayeque, said some areas were losing their organic banana production because the rains had affected the roads.
Segundo Gregorio Morales Sanchez, the president of the Association of Organic Bananas and Miguel Grau, from Olmos, said they were losing nearly 60% of their product because they couldn't transport their fruit as the roads had collapsed.
"The rains have isolated us. We can't take out our products. We export our organic bananas to the Netherlands, but so far we have been unable to ship it," said the producer, who added that this was due to the lack of support they have received from the authorities.
He also said that they had asked local and regional authorities to improve the region's unpaved roads long ago, but that they had never executed any work.
Morales Sanchez asked the Regional Government of Lambayeque to start rehabilitating the roads so that they stop losing more fruit, as they are currently in debt with Agrobanco, which gave them a credit and financed 30% of the 110 hectare banana project in the area.
