Italy: Geofur exports half of its radicchio

Cristiana Furiani, owner of Geofur (Verona), talks about the winter radicchio season. "The year was better than the previous one, although that was easy to achieve, considering the disappointing results of 2015/2016. We are very pleased with the quality. Prices could have been better on average, but they weren't too bad after all."

Cristiana also stresses the need for companies to renovate and look around. "Rather than around, I would definitely say abroad. This year, we sold 50% of our produce to retailers, markets and industries abroad. France, Great Britain and Germany are the main destinations. There's not time to relax, markets must be conquered because they won't come and knock at your door."

The three weeks in January during which temperatures were constantly below zero created quite a few problems. "Only the most organised businesses managed to tackle the situation. However, the lack of produce led to a constant demand from the market."

Geofur grows all types of radicchio cultivated in Veneto. "Round" ones are the most abundant, followed by "oblong" ones and by Radicchio Igp di Verona.

"Retailers are requesting more and more radicchio PGI from Verona, also thanks to the marketing activities carried out by the Consortium. Quality was very good this year."

Red and green Cicorino

A few days ago, Geofur started harvesting red and green Cicorino, which is sold loose or in 300 gram trays. "It is definitely more appealing in trays."
