Oron Ziv, Befresh Europe:

“Good grapefruit situation in coming years”

“We are deep in the citrus and avocado seasons,” says Oron Ziv from Befresh Europe. “Unfortunately, we have limited volumes of Orri left, the season is completely different from what everybody predicted. There is quite a bit of demand, Some areas are empty. However, this is not the case for the rest of Israel, so Orri is still available. The Israeli Orri season will amount to almost 90,000 tonnes this season. When the season started, there were two or three weeks with very good prices, but from the second week of January until the second week of February prices dropped considerably. From week 6, though, prices started climbing again, and prices are now decent once again.”

Avocado
Befresh Europe focuses mostly on the traditional, European market,. The company’s avocado season is nearly over by now. “Last week, we shipped the final container, it is pretty much over by now. But it was an amazing season, we had a lot of production, and it was the third or fourth year in a row with great prices. We are now expecting a bit of a gap. South Africa will soon start, and fruit from other origins will also start arriving on the market,” Oron explains. “The gap between greenskin and Hass avocados is also becoming smaller, greenskins are also getting very nice prices now.”

Grapefruit

“Grapefruit is an interesting crop. In recent years, the grapefruit area decreased by about 50 per cent. But this season, the market was much better than it had been in years. The first fruit from the southern hemisphere will only arrive in week 19 or 20, so people who already have grapefruit now, have every reason to be happy. People in Israel are considering planting new trees. Of course, it would take up to five, six years before those trees would start producing, but it is going to be a good situation for grapefruit in the coming years,” Oron concludes.
