Chilean nectarines launched in Beijing

Today, the official launch of the first Chilean nectarine season took place in Beijing. The event was staged by the Trade Commission of Chile in Beijing. Chilean export organisation GESEX, one of the country’s largest nectarine growers and exporters, attended.

The event was attended by an enthousiastic crowd

“We organised the ceremony to be able to stage a grand opening of the season and to let consumers, retailers, importers and the media know that the fruit is available on the market from today,” says Gonzalo Matamala, the general manager of GESEX China.

“Market access negotiations for Chilean nectarines started four years ago and official market access was received a couple of months ago. In total, the first shipments of nectarines contains 150,000 boxes. Gesex China is importing 25% of this. The varieties imported are the White and Yellow flesh Nectarines, as well as Arctic Snow nectarines. These are the latest varieties available in Chile and we have saved them specifically to send to China. This way we are still able, this season, to show Chinese consumers Chile’s ability to grow and export this product.”

The Chilean nectarines are available on the market from this week onward, and will be available for another two weeks. Most of the shipments have gone to import markets in Guangzhou and Shanghai, with some fruit being send up North to Beijing. A number of Chilean exporters cooperate with supermarkets, and the fruit will be available in some retail stores by the end of this week.

2017-18 season
“The launch ceremony is to introduce the Chilean nectarine to the Chinese market, and to prepare for the 2017-18 season. Harvest will take place in November this year, and will run until March next year. GESEX is the largest nectarine exporter in Chile. Therefore we have the capacity to launch exports extra early, and supply all the way until the end of the season.”
