Peru: Rain affects more than 3,000 hectares of crops in La Libertad

According to the agricultural agencies of the Regional Management of Agriculture of La Libertad (GRALL), so far the rains and floods have affected almost 3 thousand hectares of crops.

These crops belong to the provinces of Ascope, Trujillo, Chepen, Pacasmayo, Viru, and Otuzco, in La Libertad.

The most affected province so far has been Ascope, as 1,283 hectares of hard yellow corn, asparagus, sugar cane, and rice have been affected by the weather. In Pacasmayo, the Cupisnique river, which is located in San Pedro de Lloc, flooded and affected 905 hectares of rice, asparagus, and paprika crops.

The province of Viru lost 381 hectares of chili, alfalfa, sugar cane, passion fruit, avocado, pickles, vegetables, cassava, corn, sweet potato, banana, watermelon, and chala corn, among others.

253 hectares of sugarcane, watermelon, avocado, and vegetable crops in Laredo and Moche, districts of the province of Trujillo, were flooded, swept away and buried by the natural phenomenon.

In Chepén, the Chaman River overflowed and affected 56 hectares of organic bananas, cassava, and rice. The districts of La Cuesta and Usquil, which belong to the province of Otuzco, lost 11 hectares of corn and potato crops due to the low temperatures caused by the rains.

"Agriculture is one of our main activities, and now this sector has been devastated by the disasters that have occurred in recent days. The number of hectares of crops affected has grown at an alarming rate in less than a week. In response, we have concentrated on channelling aid to the most affected families, with the support of a contingency team composed of staff of the GRALL", said Hernan Aquino, the regional manager of agriculture.

In addition, he expressed concern about the 400 meters of irrigation canals that suffered damage to their infrastructure, including: El Moro, La Incaica, and Wichanzao, belonging to the District of Laredo; Tesoro, Facala, Salinar, Ascope, and Paijan, located in the province of Ascope; Lucas Deza, and Zapotal Bajo, in the Valley of Jequetepeque; Lurifico de Chepen; and Santa Clara, Cerritos Huancaco, and Huancaquito Bajo, in the province of Viru.
