Perfect conditions for the last two years

UK forced rhubarb production back to 2007 levels

Forced rhubarb is going well in the UK, volumes this season are very good, but according to Janet Oldroyd Hulme from E.Oldroyd & Sons, this is not due to the frost levels but the fact that the roots had have had two years of ideal growing conditions outside before being moved into the sheds.

"The roots store energy which is then released when the photosynthesis is stopped in the dark sheds," explains Janet. "Conditions have been perfect for the last two years, giving us the best crop we have had in 10 years."

The market is also good according to Janet, "Dutch imports are expensive because some of the outdoor roots were destroyed by floods. This will remain a problem for a 2-3 years until new roots can be grown."

Demand for rhubarb, as with many vegetables, has seen a boost as people recognise the health benefits. Janet says that people always prefer the forced rhubarb over outdoor because it has a great colour and much better taste.
