Morocco produced 268,000 tons of berries in 2015-2016

Morocco produced a total of 268,000 tons of soft fruits, which includes strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry in the 2015-2016 crop year, according to data released at the opening of an agricultural fair in the north of the country.

According to these statistics, which were compiled by the official news agency Maghreb Arabe Presse (MAP), half of that amount was produced in the perimeter of Locus, in the northern province of Larache, where the Moroccan Agriculture Minister, Abdelaziz Ajanuch, inaugurated the National Fresh Fruit Festival, which is held over four days.

The province of Larache is the biggest producer of soft fruit in Morocco with a surface of 4,000 hectares; 2,800 hectares are devoted to the production of strawberry, 800 hectares to the production of blueberries, and 400 hectares to raspberries.

In 2009, the Moroccan Government established a strategy, in coordination with the professionals of this sector, to achieve an annual production of 360,000 tons of soft fruit by 2020 and earmarked 80,000 tons for export.
