Unsettled start to spring on UK fresh produce market

The fruit and vegetable market is a bit up and down at the moment. Is it spring or is it still winter? The weather can't seem to make up its mind, rain, hail, snow and sunshine all in one day.

Potatoes are expensive and there are not many large sizes around - this is a problem according to Wilf Whittle from Sharrocks Fresh. "It is Mother's Day on Sunday in the UK and a lot of families will go out to eat. Strawberries are also under pressure and the Food Service guys are very busy."

He goes on to say that raspberries are also a bit hit and miss just now, but spring brings with it the first UK asparagus and Jersey Royals and rhubarb.

Spanish and Moroccan tomatoes will come to an end soon making way for the Dutch and then English production.
