Mexico: Michoacan intensifies avocado exports

After intensive work on health and safety issues, the municipalities of Charo, Nuevo Urecho, and TangancĂcuaro will start exporting avocados this Tuesday, stated the head of the Ministry of Rural Development and Agricultural Food (Sedrua), Francisco Huergo.

He also said that, together, these three municipalities had 694 thousand hectares devoted to avocados, which yielded a production of 16,581 tons.

The Local Boards of Plant Health, in coordination with the National Health Service, Food Safety and Quality (SENASA), which is a part of Sagarpa, inspected the orchards and concluded that they were free of pests, and certified them.

Francisco Huergo said that this had been endorsed by the declaration published in the Official Gazette. The orchards are free of the large avocado seed weevil (Heilipus Lauri), the Conotrachelus aguacatae, the C. perseae pest, and the Stenoma catenifer bone borer moth.

This declaration has had a positive impact on these three municipalities, as they are now able to market their products to domestic and international markets without phytosanitary restrictions.
