UK: Normal timing for first asparagus

The first asparagus from the Wye Valley have been cut this week. This is later than last year according to Chris Chinn from Cobrey Farms. "Last year was exceptionally early, this is more the norm for the first cut."

Although volumes are small at the moment they are building quickly, the main volumes will come mid-late April. The weather so far has been pretty average for the time of year.

At the moment there is only green asparagus, organic will follow in two weeks with the purple and white varieties early to mid April.

Chris stated that it is a bit early to comment on the prices, but the market is for British asparagus so there is no competition with imports.
