China: New Yunnan garlic hits the market

Recently, the new garlic from Yunnan has started to enter the market in large quantities. This single-bulb, purple garlic doesn't have the authority on the market that it used to have, instead the price is in constant decline. At the start of February, the fresh Yunnan garlic started to enter the Beijing market. Even though that is 20 days earlier than market entrance in the past, the price is much lower. At the beginning of March, the large Yunnan garlic entered the stage of bulk market entrance. Based on the current situation, the downward price evolution of the Yunnan garlic is nearly unavoidable.

In terms of the weather, the growing conditions for the Yunnan garlic have been ideal during the whole growing period, so the crops are very successful with an increased yield per hectare. Initial estimations fix the increase of scale at 30%. According to this estimate, the total increase in production equals 60% to 70% compared to last year. It is possible that the actual scale of increase is even lager. The large-scale market entrance of the Yunnan garlic collides with the rest of the garlic market. The winter garlic stock in the north responded with a price drop and the same clearly goes for the overal price of large garlic. This year, more varieties were cultivated in the North and an increased yield per hectare was also observed. As such, May will clearly be the opposite situation of the tight garlic supply of only a few months before.
