In 2016, about 2,100,000 kilograms of Flandria green bell peppers were supplied to BelOrta. On 6 March, the first ones were supplied again to the auction. “Production is increasing, as evidenced by the predicted area increase of seven per cent for this year compared to 2016. The area of yellow bell pepper will remain about the same, while the red bell pepper area will increase considerably, by 38 percent. The BelOrta areas are as follows in 2017: 42 hectares red (from 30 hectares), 21 hectares yellow, and 6.5 hectares green. The red sweet pointed pepper increased its area from 4.5 to 8.5 hectares,” says Bruno Vuerinckx.

First sale
Yesterday, the first green bell peppers of the year were auctioned by BelOrta. The bell peppers were supplied by Supra-Natura from Vremde and bought by Rodiers en Zn for a price of 1.68 per kilogram. The first sale of the green bell pepper was also the herald of red and yellow bell peppers, which will be available soon once again.
Other specialities
Besides the standard bell peppers, BelOrta also has a wide range of specialities, including the Sweet Palermo and baby bell pepper. For those who like it hot, there is Jalapeño, Piccantina, Habanero and Naga. New this year is Lamuyo, which is distinctive from the regular bell pepper due to its deep red colour and large size.
