Peru: Historic mango export record

According to the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM), mango exports achieved a historic record this season as the country exported 150,000 tons of this product, i.e. 10,000 tons more than the highest volume ever shipped, which was achieved in the 2012-2013 harvest.

In relation to the previous season (2015-2016), exports grew by 20%, said Juan Carlos Rivera, the general manager of the Producers Association (EMPA), adding that the results were associated with the excellent flowering in July.

He added that the volumes could have been greater if there hadn't been a shortage of water between November and January in the central and northern coastal areas of Peru.

Heavy rains
Regarding the heavy rains falling on the north coast since mid-January, he said they had affected 8% of the campaign volumes, especially the ones that were shipped in February, when the harvest ends in Piura.

He also said that the current rainfalls could have a possible impact on the next season, as the access roads to production centers were collapsing and some processing plants and crops had been flooded. "There is time, but there is no money. Who will do that?" He replied when asked about the possibility of solving the problem before next season. "The owners should fix their own plants," he said.

Weekly report
During the harvest season, APEM makes a weekly report about mango exports via their Facebook account.

According to the latest report, on Week 8 of 2017, the country shipped 6,794 containers (with 22 tons each) of mangoes. There were 201 maritime shipments, 9 air shipments, and 35 shipments by land.

The leading exporting companies are: Sunshine Export (9%), Camposol (7%) and Frutas de Piura, Asica Farms and Dominus (6%).

The United States received 40% of the export volume, followed by the Netherlands (35%), England (8%), Canada (4%), and Spain, Germany and Switzerland (3%).

As for the fruit presentations, the union stated that 11% of the exports were of frozen mango (16 000 tons), which was sent to the United States (38%), Belgium (11%), and Germany and Canada (10%).
