Italy to host the 8th International Table Grape Symposium

Between 1st and 7th October, Italy will host the 8th International Table Grape Symposium, the leading scientific event for the sector.

The University of Foggia has organised scientific sessions, tours and a round table on logistics and market issues to be held in Puglia between 1st and 5th October. Then, on 6th and 7th October, scientific sessions and tours of facilities and orchards will take place in Sicily.

A global project
Italy was chosen not only because it is one of the main producers of table grapes, but also because of its contribution towards innovation in this sector. The concept of the Symposium was actually developed in Italy in 1991.

Since then, the scientific community and professionals from all over the world meet every 3-4 years in one of the countries most relevant in this sector. The last Symposium took place in Australia in 2014.

Topics
In addition to being an occasion to discuss issues within the table grape sector, the event is also an occasion to talk about the progress achieved and compare results obtained by international research. The following topics will be discussed:

- production types, economy and marketing;
- ecology, biology and physiology of productions;
- genetic resources and propagation;
- traditional and innovative crop techniques;
- post-harvesting and processing;
- pest and disease control.

Committees and conveners
The Symposium was promoted by professors from the Universities of Foggia, Palermo and Turin as well as by Agriproject Group and Graper. The Organising committee also included other Italian universities and research bodies. The Scientific committee is made up of experts part of Scientific institutions in Australia, California, South Africa, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, China, Iran, Turkey, Spain, Portugal and, of course, Italy. The Conveners are professors Laura de Palma (University of Foggia), Rosario Di Lorenzo (University of Palermo) and Vittorino Novello (University of Turin).

The Symposium has the interest of producers and of their association (Apeo - Associazione Produttori Esportatori Ortofrutticoli) at heart. In addition, the organisation will work alongside Agrifood Consulting, which will be the Event Manager, and Soluzioni Omnia Media, the Organising Secretariat.

Partners and sponsors
In addition to the sponsorship of the Universities and Conveners, the initiative is also sponsored by the Puglia Region, Società di Ortoflorofrutticoltura Italiana, Accademia Italiana della Vite e del Vino. The support of the Ministry for Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policy as well as of the Organizzazione Internazionale della Vigna e del Vino (OIV) has also been requested.

English will be the official language of the Symposium, with simultaneous translation into Italian.
