Vidalia onion season to start April 12

After a successful onion season from Peru, Shuman Produce is currently sourcing sweet onions out of Texas and Mexico. “We look forward to Vidalia season starting in just 6 weeks,” said John Shuman, President of Shuman Produce.

The Vidalia onion industry is experiencing very favorable growing conditions. “We had a warm fall with lots of sunshine and an extremely mild winter,” said Shuman. At this time, there is minimal disease and bacteria pressure. “Pending weather conditions, we could be in for a repeat of last year’s promotable volume and high quality crop.”

Vidalia season starts April 12
As of today, this year’s crop is shaping up very nicely. Due to the excellent growing condition and above average temperature, the Vidalia Onion Advisory Panel met with Georgia Commission of Agriculture, Garry Black, and made the decision to set the start date for this year’s Vidalia season for Wednesday, April 12.

Shuman Produce is featuring its How to Speak Southern Campaign during the 2017 Vidalia onion season, launching at the Southern Exposure conference next week. The hashtag #howtospeaksouthern will be shared over social media.
